Jan 21 (Reuters) – A federal appeals court said in an opinion on Wednesday that people who represent themselves without a lawyer still “shoulder responsibility” to guard against errors caused by the use of artificial intelligence to draft legal filings, weighing in on a pressing issue as AI “hallucinations” show up in more and more cases.
“As pro se litigants employ AI to assist with court filings, a basic reminder seems wise. Accuracy and honesty matter,” a panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said, opens new tab. Still, the court said “the inquiry is different” for courts grappling with errors by litigants without legal training rather than licensed lawyers.
